    Introduction

    The Department of Gastroenterology is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of major digestive diseases such as upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas, and biliary tract diseases.


    Gastrointestinal tract: responsible for digestion, absorption and excretion of food

    Liver: responsible for overall body metabolism

    Pancreas, biliary tract: responsible for secretion and regulation of digestive enzymes


    The Department of Gastroenterology subdivides digestive diseases and provides specialized treatment for diseases of the esophagus, stomach,

    duodenum, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, biliary tract, and gallbladder. We operate a disease center to treat patients.


    We Treat patients with all gastrointestinal cancers, including gastric cancer, colon cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, and biliary tract cancer,

    which are the major cancers in Korea. Centering on the Department of Gastroenterology, we have established a multidisciplinary treatment system

    with all related departments such as surgery, radiology, oncology, and radiation oncology to provide prompt and best treatment. In addition, by opening

    the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, we are building the nation’s best treatment and treatment system.


    In particular, the Department of Gastroenterology, equipped with cutting-edge technology and the best medical staff, including spyglass (biliary

    endoscopy), introduced for the first time in Korea in 2016, is contributing to the development of domestic medical care by conducting various research

    as well as recovering health through treatment of patients’ diseases.

    Upper gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine disease) : Esophageal cancer, esophagitis, esophageal motility disease, functional gastrointestinal disease, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, gastric polyp and adenoma, gastric cancer
    Lower gastrointestinal tract (small intestine, large intestine disease) : Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, colon polyps, colon cancer
    Liver (liver disease) : Acute and chronic hepatitis, alcoholic and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, benign liver tumor, cirrhosis, liver cancer

    Features

    Upper gastrointestinal tract

    Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, and capsule endoscopy are performed to diagnose diseases of the esophagus, stomach,

    and small intestine, and endoscopic resection of gastric polyps and adenomas, early esophageal cancer, and early gastric cancer. In addition, various

    therapeutic endoscopes are being performed, including stent insertion for esophageal/gastric/duodenal strictures, endoscopic hemostasis for upper

    gastrointestinal bleeding, and endoscopic percutaneous gastrostomy for enteral nutrition.


    Lower gastrointestinal tract

    Colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, capsule endoscopy, and enteroscopy are performed for the diagnosis of small intestine and colon diseases.

    Endoscopic resection of colon polyps and early colorectal cancer, stent insertion for colon obstruction, endoscopic hemostasis for lower

    gastrointestinal bleeding, etc. A therapeutic endoscopy is being performed. In particular, the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center provides same-day treatment and endoscopy for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis patients, and improves the quality of treatment through cooperation with the Department of Surgery and Radiology.


    Liver

    We provide treatment for a variety of liver diseases, including acute chronic hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, cirrhosis, and complications of

    hepatocellular carcinoma. In particular, for the treatment of complications of liver cirrhosis, endoscopic esophageal varices ligation and gastric varices

    sclerosis are being performed. In the case of hepatocellular carcinoma, we are improving the quality of care by providing individualized and optimal

    treatments for each patient, such as hepatic artery chemoembolization, radiofrequency ablation, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
